About me
The person behind Haumėa.
Kaua’i, 2019
I’m Marti – a cell biologist with a doctorate (Dr. rer. hum.) and a mum of two. My path began in the sea: a biology degree with a focus on marine biology. I then completed my doctorate in cell biology, in the field of medical biochemistry and molecular biology – researching very different models, from mouse brains and fish cells to human cells. Always with the same question in mind: How does life work at the level of the cell – and what keeps it healthy?

The turning point
“If I know what keeps us healthy – why am I not healthy?”
During my studies I became ill. An autoimmune disease. I was angry and bewildered. So I started doing research on myself: stress, lifestyle, environmental factors and toxins – from pesticides to microplastics. Not on paper, but in real life.
This journey became especially intense when starting a family entered the picture. The question How do I get healthy? grew into a bigger one: How do I create an environment in which new life can develop healthily? Today I know from my own experience how much can be clarified, learned and prepared along this path.
Epigenetics explains how it all reaches our cells — a field I’m currently deepening through further training.

What do you see when you look at this picture?
An underwater world – painted onto my belly while one of my children was growing inside it. The sea, right where new life begins: everything that drives me, in a single image. And if you spot the small round logo at the top – it was created from exactly this painting.

Where the name comes from
Haumea
The Hawaiian goddess of fertility, birth, creation and renewal. She stands for what this is all about: new life.
Maris
From the Latin mare, the sea. Where all life once began – and where my roots lie: marine biology was my focus at university.
I found Haumea on Kaua’i in 2019. In a small shop, I stopped in front of a painting. Those eyes, that calm, that depth. The image wouldn’t let go of me. It is Haumea by Isa Maria – today she welcomes you at the top of this page.
And the cell? It isn’t part of the name – it is the place where both parts meet. Life once began in the sea; to this day, it begins with a single cell. That is exactly where my work starts.
That’s why it’s called Haumėa.
